Which is the best free forum software to install? I have been using phpbb and was wondering if anyone knew of a forum that had more/better features than this one.

SMF is fine, and I really like that it is easy to mod it yourself.
I used phpBB for some other forums that I made in the recent past, but it is not so good, because it produces big overhead, and it is very unsecure. In three months (that I used it) there were made 3 critical security updates....

SMF is pretty good, it seems to have a lot of available hacks. I've had some experience with both PhoBB and Invision Power Board (v1.3 is freeeee) and I've reached a conclusion: IPB is better (for me at least), since PHPBB always seems to have security issues. And who doesn't remember the worm for PHPBB...

I don't like phpBB... it is SMF for me.
SMF just released a new version with a much better default skin.

I hate default skins its like using a website template that is already in use on a lot of other sites...

That's true. And in fact there are thousands of begginers that use default themes to start a community. I believe this way you have no chance to success. Even if you use a non default template, you should change it a lot before enstablish your site.

I agree with Nikolas. After all there are thousands of forums out there, so you have to be unique if you want to be competitive

Yes it is easy to use, and propably easier than phpBB because it has less complexed feautures.
