If a site has amazon affiliate ads where the site owner gets about a 4% commision on sale of an amazon book (which maybe costs $35).

Does it makes sense for the site owner to create an ad to that Amazon affiliate site, and then pay Google (say 0.05 per click) to display that ad on targeted search words such as "Books for Learning Flash CS3"?

If we knew what was the conversion rate of the Amazon sales, then we can do some math and know that answer.  But that is the catch, we don't know the conversion rate until we actually do it.  But we don't want to do it, until we know the answer.  Hence you have to estimate.

I think for this kind of business is amazon the wrong affiliation partner, maybe if you sell selected products with higher provision, check this blog post:

I have to agree with Olaf: Amazon may be wrong affiliate program for this. I would go for some affiliate program from TradeDoubler instead like computers or vacations. You get more commission for each sale.

I have never used Amazon that much so I can say anything about how easy it is for you to track the keywords that are generating sales, but tradedoubler got a fantastic system to track your keywords and traffic sources making it possible for you to stop bidding on non-working keywords and only keep the keywords that generate sales.

What items are better items to sell besides books?  I don't have to sell books for Amazon.  Amazon sell almost anything now -- including non-perishable grocery and cell phone plans.

it depends on who do you promote the affiliate links/products.

if you have a blog about some book with 1000 visits a day you can sell this book too.

do you checked the blog post from Nick ?

Amazon is a very well established eshop. That means that if someone wants to buy a book and is aware of amazon, he/she will go directly to them in order to buy. So the only way to sell an amazon product is that you have a site which have information on products that amazon sells, and in that way you "convince" people to buy.

In my opinion there are much better affiliate programs than Amazon. Check clickbank and commission junction.
