It all depends on the content and who is interested in that content.
When Stumbling random sites; if I find one I like, I often give it a thumbs up to put it in my list to visit later. Sure, no conversion on the first visit but I might write my own blog entry about the site at a later date.
I have had both Stumblers and Diggers post comments and click on ads.
So it's more to one's advantage to stumble first, then write a blog cross-linking such a site to generate more traffic to the blog's links, or does it just strengthen the amount of positive traffic to the original site?

Free Traffic always have less conversion rates. But however this one is good to promote at least and people will come to know about your site. If your domain name is easy one than you will be able to get direct traffic as well.
Anything free with little effort is always welcome.

Stumble is a very good source of traffic, but this traffic bounces very quickly. So it may not be worth the effort.

tim, from the paymentblogger article you wrote in april07:

I love stumbleupon it brings hundreds if not thousands of visitors to my sites every day...
so i guess things have changed since this last post? does stumbleupon bring plenty of traffic to your sites already?
Yeah I do belive that conversion rates from these kind of sites are very less. I also see this kind of pattern in Digg and delicious as well. But however its a nice way to give introduction of your works to people at large.

I use stumble sometimes to find great new resources to write about and have found some gems that I use almost daily.
