It's possible that it could work - especially if your URL is catchy and short. This technique is especially beneficial if your website is meant for a local audience It may work for general-audience websites as well, especially if it's an entertainment/humor site

This is an odd form of advertising, but you could leave flyers around in coffee shops with free wifi.

Some more ways:
Go to office depot and get a stamp for $20 that has your URL and a brief description. Pickup a 1000 pack of bright colored notes. Get to postin and stickin.
