This is an extension to the discussion on duplicate content Visit through proxy.

If you have a blog hosted say on a free server wordpress.com, and wish to move its contents to a new server, under a new domain can you do it without evoking a duplicate content penalty. Would deleting the original content work? is it worth it?

I'm in the process of moving a blog from a hosted site to a dedicated site, and am wondering if its worth taking the posts!

As this is something not common, I guess you will be the one to learn if it will have any impact to the way search engines see your content.

The problem is that you can't redirect impermanently the old site to the new one from a hosted service, so the only thing you can do is to copy all your articles, and then let them blank on the hosted blog, but be sure to have a lot of links from the old site pointing to your new one.

I agree it's not common but its not unique either!
My plan is to experiment using 2 low PR sites first i.e merging my personal site and blog together. see how it goes, I think I will adopt a tease technique so rather then delete old posts put teasers up to the full posts on the new site, this should hopefully be treated like I have just moved the page contents around.

I will let you know how it goes.

Merging sites is much easier. If you use permanent redirects, then it going to help with search engines.

Both the whois and the pagerank tools in this site, used to be other sites. After the permanent redirects, google was very fast in the process of reindexing the sites, and send traffic.

Sadly not an option, the blog is hosted on wordpress.com, life is never simple, still it could be interesting to see how Google reacts. I'm wondering if its worth continuing once I finnished moving posting teasers to the  wordpress.com blog for a bit or just let it die!

Many of the issues are solved, the new site will use a pre-existing feedburner account which I have been promoting which will help those with feed readers make the transitions. By turning all the wordpress.com posts to teasers with links to posts on the new blog should help. I will also contact my best referrers and beg that they change their link increasing PR and helping to relegate the old blog.

If it works on my blog I will move our clients the same way.
