As you may know, Yahoo charges $299 for a listing to their directory, which makes them the most expensive directory in the planet, but that's not my point here.

Recently I read a blog post from a marketing firm Visit through proxy who sais that they had lower search engine traffic since they paied for a listing, as the Yahoo SERPs list sites with their company names, instead of omething more descriptive.

So that creates the question once more. Does a listing in Yahoo helps with the SEO of a site?

I guess this depends on what description you use when submitting your site to the directory. I see the same issue with one of my sites in Google. The Google results show the DMOZ description of my site instead of the content of my site. This is not a problem for me at the moment, but if the site use changes I guess this can be quite a SEO problem for some sites...

With google there is a solution to remove the DMOZ description Visit through proxy, but Yahoo will index you in their directory only using your company's name. So if your company's name has no target keywords is a problem....

Directory listings do not normally effect SEO except in psuedo positive way however non technical marketing companys have a nasty habit of submitting sites willy nilly to directories and then doing nothing...

After an initial spike they watch their site results go down and wonder why is that, simple the algorithm has changed their site never gets updated and the only links are from directories.

Given the current state of DMOZ and its affiliations with AOL I suspect Google will be using their results less and less.

I have no experience about the directory listed website on yahoo, but it looks to me that listed websites have some priority.

I noticed a strange thing with one of my sites (all4yourwebsite), check:
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=web+design+templates&fr=yfp-t-501&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8 Visit through proxy

In the past I have never a lot of visitors from yahoo, but here it's the first time I have visitors searching yahoo for "web design templates"
so maybe they changed something?
