Adwords was a subject that I was never mastered as other promotion methods worked better for me in the past. To be more specific I believe that adwords is for sites that sell something, otherwise it has no real use(or you can spend your money with a better way).
So after the launch of our first software product, I though I can use adwords to promote it, and make more sales. As I see there are many things I don't know, but until now I found some things that may help, and wanted to share with the rest of the team. Feel free to add your tips to this thread too
1) An advertisement should look like this :
[Catchy headline] [Benefit for the user] [Feature] [U R L]
So with that in mind a good ad for our script would be :
Earn more with Clickbank Use our contextual clickbank script and earn more money with clickbank! CBContextual.com
An ad should have a lot of keywords associated to it. Specific keywords are better than general. For example "make money with clickbank" is better than "make money"
Having tons of keywords is good for the visibility of your ad but it is bad for tracking conversions. So I guess a campaign should start with a small group of keywords, and then add more or remove those that are not converting sales(it sounds easy but it is not...)
Another fact about keywords is that your ad will get penalized if the keywords you are using are not present at the landing page. So it is better to have different landing pages for each keyword group. This is also better for conversions. Think of clicking a "make money" type advertisement on a site that talks about "Rich Jerk"(which is the keyword in our case) and in that site you see information about making money but with no reference to the rich jerk
Changes. I think the best time to make changes to a campaign is after it get its first 100 clicks or more. This is because you can't really know the result of the campaign with less. Example : You start a campaign and it gets 1 sale from 10 clicks. This can be really good, but it may be really good to be true, because it is not impossible to get 0 sales for the next 1000 clicks. So you need to be patient in order to have a clear view of what is going on with your ads.
Price is not a big issue. By that I mean it doesn't matter if you pay $0.02 or $12 per click as long as your ads converting to sales that cost more than you paid. So it is a matter of ROI(return on investment)
Last tip - at least for now - is don't be afraid to lose money. Think of your first campaigns as lessons. None made a living by spending $10 or $100 in adwords. This process requires a lot of trial and error. Just start slow to see how things work and you will find the path to your success
