hi. i recently made a major change in my directory structure. a lot of visitors coming from the search engines just get directed to my 404 page.

is there a dynamic way for a visitor going to a non-existent page like
articleomatic.freehostia.com/translate/fr/?/Games/PoP_Rival_Swords_Walkthrough.php3
to be redirected to the correct page,
articleomatic.freehostia.com/ylang/fr/Games/PoP_Rival_Swords_Walkthrough.php3
instead?

please note that there are a lot of pages, more than a thousand.

For the exact example you can redirect using this code in your /translate/fr/index.php file :

if ( isset( $_SERVER['QUERY_STRING'] ) ){

header 'HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently' );

header 'Location: http://articleomatic.freehostia.com/ylang/fr' $_SERVER['QUERY_STRING'] );
 exit;
}

one more thing, i renamed a couple of my directories because i made a mistake with their names before and i wish to correct it because it is giving me problems with the translation engine. i tried using your script to redirect from the old ones to the new but its not working. im getting a 404. here is an example of one of the old directories. please notice that i used spaces between words:

articleomatic.freehostia.com/10 Newest Articles/Medical_Assistance_Training.php

i want to rename them using "-" between words:

articleomatic.freehostia.com/10-Newest-Articles/Medical_Assistance_Training.php

i think i will try htaccess first.

Code:
Redirect permanent /old-directory http://www.your-domain.com/new-directory

if anyone of you guys have a better way, please let me know. thanks!

update: nope, the above didnt work for me. but this did:

Code:
# This line enables Apache's Rewrite Engine; it is required for the following lines
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase   /

RewriteRule (.*) http://www.your-domain.com/new-directory/$1 [R=301,L]
