another question, is it important to use mod_rewrite for this kind of sites?

btw. this was my first php5 project...(not the cloud that was an old script of mine)

mod_rewrite would be better for the indexing process.

The ad placement could be better, but I guess you should work on that after you use another template

The site looks OK, the template is not very bad if you ask me, maybe the blue around is a little too blue and makes a lot of contrast to the rest of the site. 

I believe you don't need an exceptional template to be a hit, a useful site could do it too, just think of YouTube!

A last thought on this,
Maybe a better blending of the container with the background with some border color

something like this for the header, content, footer divs borders
(of course not on all the sides of all the layers)
make the color a little bit darker then your BCD8A1 of the content green
