How much bandwidth does your avarage website use? (non proxy or file sharing)

 Sorry for so many questions, my head is full of idea's. But I am wondering how much bandwidth does your avarage website or forum use? Also if you could tell me how much bandwidth your whole server is using that would be great  .

I guess 2-5GB a month for a regular website is a good number...

So unless you were running a proxy or some sort of download website you wouldnt be using much bandwidth at all. That is music to my ears  .

of course there are websites using more but regular websites with normal content (text/images) and 1000 daily visitors doesn't have much more then 5GB as traffic (that why the big hosting provider can oversell their servers)

 The reason why I ask this question is because I have a Business Class Cable modem with 5 IP addresses that allows webserver's. Its 6mpbs down and 768kbs up which is about 200gb per month or 120gb real world transfer. And it wouldnt cost me anything to host my own server. They will also do reverse IP for free for me. I havent had a power outage sense we had the big black out.

 Then I could use all my money for promoting my website and when/if it starts making money I could just move the server to a real quailty cololation provider like www.colo4dallas.com . Right now they are not in my budget range. The max I want to pay a month now is $50. But I would rather put $50 a month into promoting my website instead of putting $0 into promoting. Next year my wife will be a nurse and all our money problems will be solved. I could put $500 a month into the server and promoting the website each month easy.

I know I couldn't make a proxy website. But I could make a regular website's. It seems latley I am seeing alot of people loosing their adsense account over proxy website's. I dont know what their doing wrong, but I dont even have a adsense account to loose. I would hate to get a adsense account and loose it right away.


Edit: I have been sitting on a nitch domain name for some time now. I really would like to try and transform that into a website that makes a nice monthly profit. And if that dosent work I could move the server right to a budget colocation 30 minutes from my house and then set some proxy websites up on the server. I dont have anything against proxy websites but its been my long time dream to make this website work.

User +spam bots +media = Bandwidth

Couple of things, make sure you don't have to much spam or attempted spam using up your bandwidth services, like akismet are great at preventing it appearing on sites, biut don't prevent it using up the resources.

Make sure that your media files are optimised or better still not hosted on your bandwidth restricted area, if it is make sure it can't be hotlinked to.

More users = more bandwidth use
so popular web site will use up more bandwidth that said an entirely text based site with 1000's of hits a day can still use less bandwidth then the movie site with large quantity of videos and 2 users.

Your questions here are very general. I mean that the bandwidth a site uses really depends on what the site is about (as Tim said)

For the beginning you can use your home based "datacenter" but I am not sure if this will work for a proxy site. In any way you can try it as it will be really easy to move your site to another server if you need to.
