Let's code!
« on: Jun 14, 2007, 10:56:10 am »
Just a quick hello (as I'm on the job).
I've joined this forum mainly to post a fix to a user's problem. Unfortunately this user was a newbie lost in the code, so unfortunately the help wasn't that helpful (other than: go learn php somewhere else ). So I'm happy to put my swing on the topic and hopefully provide the poor bruised newbie with some enlightenment (because I needed the exact same answer to the question they were asking - so I delved further into the net and found my answer elsewhere!).
I've been using PHP with Dreamweaver for about 7 years now, so I'd consider myself above beginner and not confident enough to say I'm intermediate. But have to say that I love PHP and learn something every day and apply it to practical situations that help me build functional web sites.
If you're a newbie to PHP - don't worry, we all were once. Hang in there and you'll get some progress going in time
See you around the rooms

Hi guys! I'm an Aussie gal enjoying the big sandy metropolis that is Dubai. Only been here for 9 months so far, but loving it to date.
Olaf, I completely understand that PHP isn't a language that can be tweaked with if you don't have any experience - but digging those code trenches as a newbie helps create coding 'General' (if you make it through the maze of snippets available - er, that are supposed to be easy to use ).

Glad to have you on the board Mandy. It's always nice to have someone else to help out us Newbies. I guess I have been in PHP for nearly a year, and I LOVE it!

the reason that I use this forum for my scripts is that I like to help people (using the scripts). I don't like these "webmasters" which are asking everything like "please write a script for ...."
I think a php forum should be to help some with his code no one at any forum should be abused by other people (try to imagine what kind of email requests I get )

Oh yeah - I can only guess at the kind of email requests you would get. And yes, there are some people who want a magic answer to drop in their lap (at someone else's expense). But when posting a script to provide users with easy use of PHP and to extend their knowledge, it's fundamental to providing clear instructions (so very basic terminology & instructions are required) - then it will be a pleasure for them to install and you both would have accomplished something wonderful.
We 'seasonsed' coders sometimes forget how frustrating it was to be a newbie and try to work a script with limited instructions. The dilemma is... should all newbies be introduced to PHP this way (possibly losing those users that don't have the patience to hang in there and dig further), or should we try to make it easier for them, so more people use the code (& learn the code) and our community gets stronger (and dominates the world [**Dr Evil laugh**])?
Olaf, don't get me wrong, your Upload & Universal Download code snippets were great and work fantastic , but I did have to get my advice elsewhere and find a work-around to make it work. Just a little request encouraging clearer instructions for the user.

PHPNewbie-KY: Good to see more people are taking up PHP - it's an awesome code and can do soooo much! I'm currently encouraging a colleague to convert from ASP to PHP - he's loving it too! I think he'll be a great protege and hopefully in time will be better at it than me! If you learn something new every day, your knowledge will soon expand. You go girl!

Php is a great language, but the real great thing about php is the community around it. I have to admit that I learned php by myself (==by the community) and I think that we should not forget that, and that everyone should contribute to the community the way he/she can.
Of course it is very annoying when someone asks you a complete solution for free, especially when writing code is what you do for living The purpose of the php/open source community is to help people learn.
