If you are familiar with IBP Arelis is a similar package,
I used it once but I prefer IBP (maybe I did not see the potential)
but, you can input a keyword and the program will find the top rankers in google (or other engine) and analyze them to see where they get their backlinks, what anchor texts they are using, and find trends and help you get some of the same backlinks.
I think similar functionality can be found with SEO spyglass (free) and IBP Arelis (paid) but I believe seoelite also has a trial period that you can check it out for.

This technique is very old and sure that it works. For instance you want to place your site in the SERPs for X keyword. Search that in Google and write down the first 50 results (or even less)
Then visit all those pages and search for link:www...... This way you will get all the sources that linked to those sites. There would be a lot of them that you can get a free/cheap link and the good thing is that you know that those links work with the keyword you want
I've done this in the past and got good results in high competition keywords

OK so you can do what SEOelite does without the help of it, you are right. But since you have a great help (if you can afford it) why not use it, right ?
