I just have to tell you this. A few days ago I installed wordpress on one of my sites as a subdomain (not including the word blog or wordpress). Since I didn't finish it then I simply left it as it was (without any links to it) and today the blog spam started .
I have no idea how they found the blog, but they must be really busy figuring that stuff out.

I think they are using some softwares or scripts to do the spam, so they will not be busy, they only need a good machine and broadband.
I agree, but how do they find the blogs. This blog was in a directory that wasn't called blog, wordpress or anything related to blogging.

Ye, if when you set it up, you don't shut off the pings until you are ready to launch it your site will probably be found by spammers :/ Best you can do is install something like Akismet, or some other Wordpress spam plugin.

Just a short update: So far my blog has been active for 95 days and I have never promoted it and still no links to the blog and the spam filter has so far caught over 70 spam posts. That's kind of cool and really annoying. Imagen how many spam posts the really big blogs must get....

Akismet collects around 250 comments a day on the venture skills blog, even my new timnash.co.uk blog recieves 30 or 40 spam and trackback comments
I only had one spam come to my email box as notification ...
I guess spammers are lazy ... they prefer the easy targets - non protected blogs that can use their automated spammers on ... then to manually post on blogs with spam protection
get ~300 spam mails a day and I think the same number via my blogs (most of them are catched by akismet)
I think it's a lot since I just installed wordpress for testing purposes and I never added any links to the blog at all. /Andreas

Andreas, that doesn't really matter. Once you post something in your blog and your blog software pings indexing sources, it is very easy for spammers to find you.
And I guess that they are more interested in new blogs for spam, as there will be more success for them.

not really when you made the test post your blog pinged all the blogging service, creating hundreds of links so while search engines won't find it blog search engines will, as will technorati etc.
