Will it catapult you to the #1 spot in the search engines for some niche keywords instantly?

Not quite true Wink
Most blogs use nofollow but some don't and others are choosing not to and are joining the dofollow movement including the occasional ac or edu blog also nofollow doesn't mean it doesn't count but thats another story.

But on the whole comments on blogs are because you want to comment not because you want a link Wink

I am not sure if that would help you. An abbandoned blog should have many spam comments. So I guess your link will have less weight, plus the page would have lose its relevance.

There is no added benefit to having on .gov or .edu sites, in terms of 'link juice'.  Matt Cutts at Google has stated this a number of times, albeit somewhat ambiguously.  I'll see if I can find some links to the interviews I have in mind and post them.

That would be interesting to read from Matt - please post if you see it.

I am forced to take a class each semester at a tech school - through work.  Well, I have been filling my projects randomly with targeted links (cuz my 'host' is a .edu)  we'll see if I get any change.
