Hi Folks,
This seems to be a good place to ask a question that is bothering me a long time now.
"Are Meta Tags really Dead ?"
I have my very own opinion on this but i don't wanna to spoil the party. How ab out a poll on this matter here? I would love to hear all of your opinions about this.
Travelling through the matrix, you can find all kinds of answers, a broadband controversy. But all seems to go in the direction "Out".... or not?
So, good people enlighten me. I hope that i've started a record breaking threat here and that i get many answers. :-)

I refer to meta tags in general. And the title tag that has gotten lost on this very website in particular. - Lost because it is the most important of all meta tags and therefore has earned it's place right behind the <head> On the roots of the hair so to speak :-) tatoo-wise...

That starts to go in the right direction here. Now what you're saying is that keywords are not accounted for at Google, where i fully agree with you and the article you provided the link to.
To get to the bottom of this we should start by asking 'Why does Google ignore the meta tags?' The answer is simple. they've spent probably a billion dollars on registering search patents and roboting methods which now can be used by Google only. They don't need meta tags anymore.
Now think about this: Google accounts for 48% of all internet searches - that leaves 52%! to the rest from whom most of them still widely relay on meta tags. Why ignore the requirements of the bigger piece of the market?
First we stop adding and developing meta tags just because Google told us so and than we complain that other search engines don't deliver accurat results? That's playing straight into Googles hands. Highlander - there can be only one! :-)

I add them (almost) always, because I'm sure they help. Tagging is something that's used in the web 2.0 world, If you have those keywords in your site you can use them very easy for other purposes (think about wordpress blogs)
So if I press Alt F4... What?

As far as my experience goes
meta keywords and description are used only by some search engines and google has actually said it will output the "description" or the DMOZ description if can't find a relevant snippet from within the page
so those META are not completelly dead
the rest of them defintelly have a use as Olaf mentioned an example already

As i mentioned before, Google doesn't need much more information than they gather already. Five years from now they know everybody's shoe size just by looking up the name and address. :-) Hey i can hear George Orwell rumbling in his grave. lol Did anybody hear any statement from e.g. MSN or Yahoo about this? They don't seem to encourage webmasters to neither use or let die of meta tags.
Anyway i'm certain they don't hurt

I was very surprised that Google has told me that even the "lang" attribute is not used by google...
I did not see it in the link you provided
"If you decide to use this meta tag," this could actually mean that if you page is in English there is no need to include it or our crawlers are smart enough to recognize the language from the content
But I see what samiotis is saying but the best of all gathering tools is really GMAIL they have everyones info + ALL their conversations personal and professional
Pretty scary, I am trying to move away from GMAIL but I can't (addicted)
but even if I did once I communicate with someone with @gmail then they have my conversation as well
I am a metal monkey!

Regarding the meta & google thing, Google is still using the meta description. They don't use it for ranking, but for the listing of your page in the SERPs. So with a good description you can get a better CTR from the SERPs. The same goes for the title too as it is used as the anchor text in google's SERPs.
In general using meta tags is not bad as meta data can be used by various crawlers.
