VPS: is it the new shared hosting? Do you think VPS hosting will replace shared hosting in future?
What do you think?

I got this from a webhosting company:
Quote
Virtual Private Servers are the most advanced step in server virtualization technology. They are used to partition a single physical server into many isolated virtual private servers. Each virtual private server looks and behaves exactly like a real networked server system, complete with its own set of init scripts, users, processes, filesystems, etc.
So basically, its shared hosting, but more secure.

I think VPS could really help because if a certain server is hosting a spam site, then it will be blocked so the rest of the people who have there site hosted wont be punished ... or will it not work that way?

This is not too sure. There are spam databases that block ip adresses and others that block domains. If a domain is blocked it can't harm anyone else except the spammer, but if an ip is blocked, it will harm all the other sites that use this ip. VPS are hosted (as far as I know) on shared ip adresses, as it is impossible for the hosting company to use one ip adress per site.

i'm not sure about that, since it varies from host to host. But VPS is indeed more costly than regular shared hosting.

I didn't really know what it was either but I had heard about it. It seems like it is pretty popular.

A word to the wise on VPS hosting. I ordered a 128MB of ram VPS from Unixshell. And by the time I loaded all my programs on the server the load hovered around .30 with no websites. And it spiked to 2.0+ every time a cronjob ran. I haf a few cronjobs that ran every 5 minutes. The Load on the VPS was spiking all over the place. Every time a cronjob ran the server would become unresponsive. I have heard many people say you really do not want a VPS thats under 256MB of ram. Thats something I would check into.

Yes, it is. I'm thinking of getting a VPS package pretty soon, as my site will grow. I'ts also a good idea when you're looking for regular shared hosting to see if they have solid VPS options in case your site gets too big and the shared package can't handle the onslaught of visitors (:p)

well vps is a virtual private server and i think it will replace shared hosting. You see when a host expands he needs more space and a more dependable host than just a shared one so he goes for a vps which is half the price of a dedicated server. I think vps is the future.
