Domain appraisals

Recently I took a look in my domain portfolio and thought to sell a few. In fact I have one that can be easilly considered as a premium domain and for the right price I would sell it.

What I want to ask is where should I appraise my domain? I am in this business for many years, but I never understood how domains are charged so I guess an expert opinion would help.

Are these domains hosting sites? If not, are you at least parking them and getting some sort of stats?  The first thing you're going to want to do is to get that traffic reporting in hand. 

Next, if it has existing web traffic or old links, it might be useful to get reporting from each of the top web search sites on how many times they have indexed specific URLs.  While after the domain is sold the content won't be the same, it at least will give some trust to the domain.  You might also want to gather the google pagerank, etc.

Next, think about keywords: are there any keywords in the name - or does it ring a bell.  For example, cars.com has cars, automobiles, vehicles as keywords.  Is yours santahats.com - well your keyword probably are santa hats, hats, christmas hats, caps, christmas apparel.  Then do keyword research to see how often those keywords are searched - and search the highest competitors.  If there are no strong competitors, that also becomes another selling point: with this domain, there is tons of room at the top for you to take.

Finally, the biggest suggestion I have is to get it appraised in many forums.  Every place will have different opinions.  Couple that with what you think is the most accurate, and start a bidding scenario at a domain sales place.

I've had friends who tried to sell domain names and had great luck and some who had horrible luck.  I've never heard anything quality and reputable about businesses claiming to do assessments of the domains.

The domain market is very strange and I think you must be lucky to sell in a good price. My guess is that it depends on who wants your domain. Recently a gr domain sold for 100.000 euro and I think the reason for this was that the client was a big factory here in Greece (in general .gr domains are not sold frequently)

The domain I have in question is youblogger.com. I think it is a very brandable domain, plus it has "web2.0ish" keywords which gives it more value. I was thinking to create a blogging service in it - and I have already coded a part of it - but I am not sure if I should start a site in such a niche. On the other hand a big blogging company could use that domain. What do you think?

I think it's most important to get an idea how it's worth, the exactly price ? who knows

I think the real question is, do you want to sell the domain name or the business.  Those are two different types of selling.  If you're just selling the domain, put the rest of your effort into finding appraisals and research.  If you are trying to sell the business or niche, I think you'll have more success if you continue your development and have at least an intermediate functioning service on the domain.  Just my $.02

You are right Aaron. In the specific situation I want to sell the domain alone (if the price tag is good of course)

For the moment I've ordered an appraisal from godaddy. I'll let you know what is next

I got a few appraisals, and I am more comfused

Some said that the domain worths x,xxx while others said xxx. Anyway I am not giving a brandable domain like this for such a price, so I guess I will have to develop it

Anything in this world is apparently worth as much as people are going to pay for it.

and according to namebio.com past sales involving the word 'blogger' were:

and going down from there

and for word 'you'

youseeme.com $9.9K
and going down from there

therefore my mind says that x,xxx would be a nice price to sell it
but if you think you can develop it and get more go for it.

I think with more than 180.000 new blogs every day, a blogging service can make some good residual income. But still this is a plan and I guess I wont develop it soon as the army gives me some serious time problems
