What is the best technique for indexing a new site in google?

I have been using social bookmarking with good success, but I was wondering what everyone else is doing.

Social bookmarking may help a lot. Also a few incoming links from authority sites or blogs may do the job.

I think forum submission and SNS posting is also the best option

That can't be all you've got to say! Huh

So I'm gonna earn myself some points to get some more free advertising on your site niko  Wink

First thing you need to do to get your site indexed at Google fast and easy is to publish a few posts and pages.
They should contain descriptive H1 to H3 titles and relevant not copied text.
Adding a few pictures with alt tags and a relevant name (other than DC-123423.jpg) will help enormously.
See that your pages all have different titles and descriptions in the page header. (meta)
Create an .xml sitemap for your website and store it in your root folder
Create robot.txt file for your website and store it in your root folder
Include the path to your sitmap.xml in the robot.txt file and save it
AFTER you've done that go to Google webmaster tools and register your sitemap
Verify your sitemap in one of the two ways offered by Google
Follow ALL steps; than wait a few hours to see your site indexed at Google!

To see if and how much of your site is indexed go to google and type: site:http://yoursite\.com

If this doesn't work let me know and I'll have a look at your site.
Don't forget to thoroughly examen your sitemap and website with the Google webmaster tools and check for errors!
Check also how Google sees your site.

Seeing as this is what I do for a living I thought I might try to earn a few points myself by responding to this post.  Free advertising never hurts and I assume if samiotis can get advertising for free then others like myself might have a chance at it to.

Anyways, optiwizer…

Social Media Marketing is one marketing venue you can take with your Internet Marketing practices. In fact many vouch that it is the strongest form of online marketing today.  However, there are several other things you can do that take a little bit of hard work initially but don’t require as much maintenance after all is said and done unlike social networks which always need on going management.

The first thing I like to do is identify who my competitors are by typing in a few keywords that I think my consumers are looking for.  If the results shown within Google SERPS display many sites that sell similar services then chances are you are in the right place.

Once you’ve identified a few of your competitors the next thing I’d do is try to discover who they are getting links from and how.  Since search engines follow links in most cases from one site to another it makes sense to start out by getting a few of the same links.

To find out who your competitors are picking up links from you can use the following command in Google:

link:theirsite.com

This will display only a sampling of the sites Google has identified linking to your competitors.  Browse through these sites and see about getting yourself a link.

While you are looking at these sites pay attention to who else they link out to on the same page.  Often times there are many related links to your industry on the same page and you can use the link: command on those sites as well.

You’ll be able to establish links on many of these sites for some kind of contribution.  Be it a financial investment to advertise on their site, an exchange of links or maybe even a volunteering of content to contribute to their site with an author link.

Have fun!

I agree with Samiotic about the importance of utilizing the google webmaster tools to submit your new site. Of course, social bookmarking right out the gate is a great start, forum posts to back it up are good, and a good directory link like BOTW should kick it up a notch. It took around a week or so for my site to get indexed...

Now ranking: What is your experience and ways to shorten the turn around time for ranking for competitive keywords?

That's the real question, asfter all who cares if your site is indexed and has zero search engine traffic?

From my experience, the way to get some search engine traffic and rankings, is by getting links from sites that are authority in your niche. It is not really hard to do that if you know who is your competitor. Try to find out who links to your competitor, and then try to get links from these sources too. The important thing is to get those links in a reasonable time frame. Instead of working a full day to gain X links try to get those links in one week or so.

Also another thing that really helps is reviews from relevant blogs. Blogs are very good because due to the syndication technologies they use they can give you rankings very fast. I had got top rankings in my terms in a few sites just by writing reviews to my blogs and guest blogging. Of course this require some work, but in our days you can even pay people to write in their blogs about your site.

All these are "manual" ways to get rankings, as social media is still the no1 because if you are able to get in the front page of a social bookmark people will do the rest of the work Wink

Nikolas,

I'm thinking that you are a huge fan of SMM.

Blogging is great but it does take upkeep.  For example, I could write for a solid month about link building on my blog and then then change my focus to content writing advice or navigation structure.  As my focus changes from time to time while still remaining within the realm of Internet Marketing so does my sites rankings to relfect that focus.  Blogs are great for short term results and frequently changing results but as they age they change as does the focus and therefore the value of any link you might pick up.

Just a thought...

In this case - I hope you use wordpress - you could use a plugin called " Sticky Post" that lets you select one or more posts out of a category that will stay always on top. e.g. link building. That would help to stabilize the situation.
Furthermore i would recommend to use "Super Cache", another plugin, that will keep your pages alive and present by caching them. Works wonders for Digg.

And last but not least, i found that multi-subject blogging is the hardest way to success. Stick to one subject per blog and you will double and triple your chances to succeed; if not with one subject, than with another. Since most web hosting providers today offer multiple domains on one account, it will only cost a few $ per year for the additional domain names.

There are several more reasons why to do different blogs for different subjects. I'm sure if you think it over you'll find some. Wink
And don't look at my McHow2 blog; that's an example that proofs only that chaos theory is true!  Grin

I almost exclusively use Wordpress but do dabble with other platforms.  I've also used and love the sticky post plugin.  In fact it is included in the next round of improvements with my niche community.  I have however not heard of Super Cache and will now go look it up.

There are many successful multi-subject blogs out their.  SEOMoz, SEOBook etc... I'll contribute that due to their following and quality content though. I do agree though that if you can keep up the juggling act that multiple blogs are far better than multi-subject blogs.

I might just look at your blog even though you told me not to.  Though that'll have to be after my trip to San Diego.

I always let the SE bots find my site and index it from my backlinks.  A single dofollow backlink from a frequently crawled site, directory, forums, blogs or socail network / bookmarking site will do the job.

It is also advisable to submit a sitemap as this will facilitate the process as well Wink

Social bookmarking may help a lot. Also a few incoming links from authority sites or blogs may do the job.

I thought I had a real jump start on getting my latest site indexed quickly when I found opportunities to have several pages linked to from Wikipedia on pages with nice PR and limited external links (one page only has 3 total). The pages are of a quality that they have not been removed by anyone, yet Google and the others are not indexing them. Other pages of the site have been indexed and I've gotten a trickle of traffic from the search engines. But, for now, most of my traffic for the entire site and all of the traffic to the linked pages is coming from those Wikipedia links.

Has anyone seen with other sites where Wikipedia links are somehow not counted? I've checked Google and the Wiki pages have been re-cached since my links have been added. Only one of the pages involved has been indexed - the first in-bound link I placed.

Wikipedia's external links are no-follow, so don't expect a seo boost from them, but it is still very good targeted traffic Wink
