i find it hard to believe that the articles we see there were submitted to their site only. why do they have a high pagerank? is it because of the backlinks they get from the articles?

Article submission software allows you to make variations of an article, so that article is unique and will rank higher.
Webmasters would never go to article directories and publish other peoples articles on their websites if they were going to get penalised for duplicate content.
You can submit an article to lots of directories and then a week later submit it to Ezine Articles and it will be accepted. It will only be rejected if there is duplicate content on Ezine Articles.

barb, do you agree that the articles on ezinearticles.com are not unique to their site?
Ezine Articles has over 1,500,000 Yahoo backlinks alone! Thousands of people visit there every day.
Duplicate content is only duplicate when it is on the same website.

Could you explain how you came to this conclusion?

All. Please take some advice from an ARTICLE WRITER, not a AFFILIATE MARKETER or SEO GUY.
Write DIFFERENT CONTENT ON ARTICLE SITES. Forget about software that change your content, it is meaningless. Most of these articles are hard to read and make you look like a bit of a moron.
The real answer is write more. The articles you submit to other sites SHOULD NEVER BE ON YOUR BLOG OR WEBSITE. This way, your site content is unique and you can still build readership and backlinks from the directories.
This is just one man's opinion, and I am an SEO idiot. That said,my site is #1 or on the first page for 5-6 two word searches and about 50 three word searches that matter.

while I agree about writing different unique versions of each article for each site, you are completely wrong about using software. The new generation of AI powered rewriters are as good or better than most human written content.

@GiorgosK
Duplicate content applies for the same site too...
Unfortunately i can't post links YET(this is why i can't quote you too ) but if you search you will see google has almost a page dedicated to this subject and warns the webmasters too...Wordpress based websites have a huge issue with duplicate content unless they take actions to minimize the problem...

there's no excuse nowadays for dupe content. Not when the tools exist to make it unique at the press of a button.

Well i am type of guy who submits one articles to different directories and most of the time it helps me in terms of backlinks. But i agrere you should not submit your website article to directories. There should be some difference in your website article and articles that you submit to article directories.
Also keep your pen name same all along these submissions. It is very important.
