I build all the backlinks to my website myself, that way I feel as though I have control.

If it smells like a skunk and looks like a skunk then it likely is a skunk. There is no easy way to build links, unless you create really good linkbait.

Yes I am in agreement with most of the consensus here with regards to outsourcing and/or purchasing back links.  If I am not completely in the loop when it comes to how specific links are being built, I don't want to be a part of it.  The important thing to me is if one is going to go through with hiring other people to aid in back-linking for yourself or a client, then it's best to go through specific individuals rather than an agency designed to create such links.  I've read in this thread and other thread how outsourcing internationally is more of a headache rather than a solid investment, so I am more apt to hiring the high school teen next door.  At least if he/she is working on one of my workstations, I can aid in developing one's talents for organic, useful information-based links.

I have tried it
I cannot say the links help a lot
(of course I have not spend much on it, just trying it out)

As far as selling links on your site
Expect your PR to drop to 0 on next update
(see http://www.gamesonline4free.net/ for example)

I took them off

Yep, works for me... There is no easy way to do things right... Real quality link building takes time.

But I think rate of conversion from social bookmarking is really low. There is no doubt that you will be able to get boost in your traffic but if such traffic is noy paying you than what's the benefit.

I generally use it when I launched my new website so that more and more people come to know about it.

you're probably not looking for direct traffic from it, you are looking for the backlink to boost your search engine rankings.
