How do I go about changing host? Do I need to write them and let them know before I move my site or do I just unsubscribe form the service? Should I move the site before the time expires at the previous host?

If you have a domain account with the same host, you can just apply for a different host server then transfer all your files to the new one and point your domain their. And then you can just contact their sales department that you would continue your domain hosting with them but not your storage hosting...

And it is always better to move before your hosting ends, to eliminate any downtimes. When I move from one server to another I leave the old one open for about a month just to be sure.

When you're moving hosts, its great to get all your files over there first. Then, if you haven't transferred your domain over there, get the IP of the hosting provider, and put your domain name and that IP in your host file. This way you can test the config before anyone else does. Then, modify the DNS so your site is on the new host.
I do not agree with keeping my domain name with the old host. What do they cost, 10 bucks? DO IT. I've noticed that hwen you move away from your host, sometimes your host is less responsible. Just my 2 cents.

If your website is database related Backup your MySql database before you do anything else! Also make a full backup of all your website files. Than contact the web hosting provider where you want to move to, best by life chat. Tell them what your plans are and follow their instructions. In most cases - if it is a good webhosting company - They will transfer the site for you including the database re-installation.
