Yep, it may look like Google has a rival called Cuil (pronounced cool). It's front page is very, very simple indeed compare even to Googles.

The design is more web 2.0, even the logo, but due to it being very new the search performance is very slow. This hopefully will spped up in time as both traffic and indexing will come to a slow trickle. Some have been saying it will not work others say at last, a competitor.

It could just die down and then forgotten, but since the developers behind cuil are from Google I don't think it will disapear over night. They have a $33 million backing behind them to help push them forward and compete with the like of Google , Yahoo! and MS Live.

Maybe at this point MS should forgot Yahoo! and invest in Cuil  Grin

What are your opinions of cuil?

the search results are very bad, I don't think that this search would ever be used by a bigger user group, just the next trial to compete with the big ones...

Yes I confirm, most of their results are sites that have no REAL connection to the subject searched !!!

They might be working on their search algorithm, they have a slew of overnight traffic a day ago and their server was down and had to upgrade due to the sudden increase in traffic...

One interesting fact is that it's built by two of the guys who built Googles 2006 large search index TeraGoogle... They base their results on keywords metrics, and not popularity metrics, so possibly they are doing some work now on their search algo...

I like the thumbnails to a degree, but like what you all have siad the results are not up to scratch yet compared to Googles. It may catch on as another top level search engine due to the fact it's owned and run by ex-google employees.

I have noticed it's much faster but again the results is rubbish. Will I use it? Erm...maybe to add my site if that option appears and maybe to do some search statistics, but thats it.

The only good thing about this company is that - according to them ofcourse - they index the web in lower cost than any other search engine. Of course this is nothing for the end user, and in addition to the fact that their SERPs sucks I believe they just want to get bought by a bigger fish.

After all even with 33$M in funds and a few big brains you can't beat Google Smiley

The imaegs are not accurate, searches for keywords with 28million hits in google return less than 10 in Cuil.

The look and feel is ok and the idea is there, but ....ho hum, why would i leave google?

reality and what you want are never codependent

There needs to be several competitors with Google. Almost seems like a surreal conspiracy when one compares the quality of Google's results that of Yahoo and Live...the later 2 being so seriously lame. Imagine for example that when TV was invented instead of folks going from receiving CBS, ABC, and NBC to cable, virtually everyone would of just picked just one of the 3 channels? Then from the perspective of being a webmaster, it would be better if the user base was using multiple engines instead of everybody "googling" everything. I have nothing against Google, but the lack of serious choices makes me want to puke. It leaves us with a dependence on Google. Sure we can buy Search Marketing Ads from Yahoo, Adwords, or the like but from my experience the consistent pool of newbs overbidding on terms has made that arena a losers fest albeit you might be spared with a few terms no one else has caught onto or you are in the business of selling something with no competition like "Live Sonoran Toad Frogs".

The most important difference between Cuil and Google is its ranking system. Rather than assigning priority to pages based on inbound links as Google does , Cuil analyzes the content of Web pages to divine their relevance to a search query. The most striking new idea is the way search results are formatted. Instead of the ten blue links displayed linearly, Cuil makes better use of the space by using columns.

Well if that is the case then surely they will have different search result on the same keyword query, correct?

Thanks for the link to cuil which I followed. Sorry, but it was not impressive. All the same, I would like to see a rival to the arrogant Google, so I wish cuil all the best and will try to remember to keep an eye on it.

If the way cuil sorts through websites is primarily the relevance of content it seems there would be an enormous number of ties ... I'll be curious to see what emerges as the "speculated" tie breaker ...
