In a nutshell, what designer stated is spot-on.  If a business wants to be able to compete online, it needs to have a presence on search engines to generate more visits to the specific website that each conducts business in.  More visits means more potential income for the business.  To me that's a definite positive! I have a client who had a website that had been around for 8 years. They had never ranked for anything and never got a single lead by email through the website. That all changed when SEO was applied.
