Well first of all you should definitely have some demo sites running that e-commerce software you plan on selling. That way people can see it in action.

Then you might want to buy some paid advertising such as Adwords or buy ads directly off sites that might have potential customers.

I agree with Nickoas here... So many people ask for help without providing enough information.

Mate if you want to promote your website than

- Hire SEO (if you want to save your time and do not want to have headache)
- Search for those forums, blogs, website which are on the base of your niche. Try to build links with them
- Use Google Adwords (finesh way to promote your website)

These are the basic one ... but if you will tell us more than we can help you in a better way.

Anyways, what it works for all sites - no matter what business is - do some serious SEO on your site. You could use some PPC too in the beginning. PR should not miss from your package.

Factors you have to consider when promoting a site/blog:
1. content - what counts most is the quality content. visitors will stay long or even coming back and forth if you have interesting, unique and fresh content.
2. On-Page Optimization - it deals with the proper use of title tags, meta tags, h1/h2 tags (headings), description, alt-tags (use when your describing images), and keywords (you can use some of the tools to check for keywords)..
3. Off-Page Optimization - it deals with getting quality of back links - building links.. All of the strategies that generates quality of back links fall under this category..
