I cannot see our site on google with our stongest keywords we were on page 7 and 12 now is gone,we had made changes to the home page would that cause it to vanish is google taking it off line to work on it? at a loss has been 3 days now.

As you said, you've changed your page. This is probably the reason for the SERPs drop

Look at the changes you made. Did you add more words? Did the number of time the keywords appear on the page change? Did you change your heading tags to make them longer or remove the keywords? Did you add the keywords/phrases to the extent where it could be considered excessive?
Review the changes you made critically and if you answer any of my questions "yes" you might want to consider reworking the content again.

yes to all,has google removed search while they update it or is there a problem,getting a bit worried

try re-upload again your previous index page then wait till google bots crawled it again. if it appears again where it was before then maybe the changes you made was the reason. but as far as i can see, the changes you've made is the possible reason why your site disappeared in it's rankings.
also, check the title, description and meta tags on your newly uploaded index, make sure it is the same with your previous page.

What kind of changes have you made? It is likely that changes to the home page can cause your drop in SERP.
