Top ranking sites for the target keyword are the best sites to get inbound links. Logically these sites will give higher ranking value as they are ranked high for the target keyword. Please correct if this opinion is not correct.

That's correct. In fact I use this technique for several years. Of course you should also have relevant content to get good rankings Smiley

The opinion is correct. Question: How do you find the "Top ranking sites for the target keyword" and how to you make them to give you a link?

You can make them... And top ranked sites don't give links away carelessly. I reality is that you have to earn the link and that is not likely to be easy especially if you are a direct competitor.

Exactly, but the top sites are also your competitors and may never link to you Smiley

This is why finding high quality relevant links is so difficult.

I find link building the most challenging part of SEO. Finding high quality relevant links is very difficult, getting them is more difficult.
Why someone should give you a link? Only if your site is worthy of it. So, I think bringing that original, unique content to your site it's a challenge.

Link building supports SEO but is not part of SEO.

I agree with your opinion. There are websites that want to sell links. They are usually medium to high PageRank sites, and often the link will be placed on multiple pages, or all pages within the site. It's possible to approach individual sites where you would like your links to appear, but it is much quicker, easier and more reliable to use a broker.

This opinion is correct but it is tough to get link from high ranking sites for the targetted keywords.

Link building supports SEO but is not part of SEO.

So you will define SEO as onsite optimization?

Markos said it all.

HOWEVER... in the 'real world' sites get linked to by all sorts of other sites, not just 'relevant' sites. If you want to make it look 'real' therefore, you should accept that you can set up a few links from places that aren't an exact match for your keywords. Remember that if it looks too 'perfect', the ses will notice - they all have a 'too good to be true' algo subroutine, you know :-)

I think relevancy is important but there is nothing wrong with getting links from seemingly unrelated sites as well. After all, very few blogs are ever about one subject only. I would love a link to my site from the BBC any way I can get it and my site certainly isn't about television or radio.

The BBC isn't about TV or news, either.

It's about acting as the mouthpiece for a borderline psychotic control freak. BBC actually stands for 'Brown's Bullsh***g Corporation'.
