linking to authority relevant sites is a big deal...

what do you mean? linking out to an authority site helps you? Or a link IN from an authority site helps you?

A link IN from an authority site will help you. Linking out to an authority site will do very little.

That's my understanding too. I was trying to get him to post something more involved, partly to show he isn't just trying to get his post count up.

Having said that, there is a school of thought (admittedly unproven) that claims linking to authority sites is good for you as it helps to establish YOUR site as an authority. Can't say I'm convinced by that though. The maths of the interlinking is truly horrendous, and even with Google's incredibly cheap cost per cpu cycle, I doubt the end result would be worth the effort.

well I think what linking out to authority sites will do is establish that your site doesn't just link to spammy viagra sites and it is actually a legitimate blog or whatever.

You are right. Linking to authority sites can be good for your visitors, but in SEO terms it doesn't do anything.

It's an interesting point, Nik. I personally think that there's "nothing to lose" by making your sites look as 'natural' as possible, and that means linking naturally. I suspect that google has a statistical filter to detect if the purpose of a site is simply to promote other sites, and it's probably based on the number and destination of your outgoing links. That's why my own software always 'mix n matches' it a little. Nothing looks faker than a 10,000 page site with only 3 destinations in its outbounds. Or so I think, anyway.

to get inbound links, we have to see to it that the website we are linking to is a relevant site... not just any other website... be RELEVANT..

That's a very nice idea. We should not treat our competitors' sites as a competitor. Placing our links on theirs is a great help for that link is a quality link.

backlinks from ANY site can help your serps. And you need UNIQUE content, not QUALITY. Search engines are crap at detecting quality, but they are EVRY good at detecting uniqueness.

Look for trade associations in your field that have websites, online newsletters, blogs, etc. And ask if you can provide content in exchange for links.

My problem is that in our industry, there just aren't many related content sites that aren't competitors. Makes it tough to get inbound links from sites with similar content.
