if u have decent content that is in context with your blogger then it may help a bit.
best SEO is to have good content, strong title's, tags, descriptions, good site maps that are updated and rss feeds always help aswell

You can start a blog on a service like wordpress.com or blogspot to create content that relates to your site and link to it. This will help your SEO in general.

Nick wouldn't they be better off having the blog hosted on their site?

Of course. Here we are talking about creating a second site (in blogger or wordpress.com) just to promote your main site

I know but that just seems like wasted effort unless you site already has a blog.

since this thread was started by some spammer, there is only one reason to use services like blogger or WP:

they are free and you don't need to update the software!

if you wp blog has some good content your links are good too

It would be much more Phoenicia to have the blog hosted with the site. The blog posts can benefit the overall sites rankings because it provides it provides fresh content.

Do you have time or a copywriter? As long as you have possibility to do a serious job, do it. Otherwise, you will get only few links without value. But if you could do it in a professional way, hiring someone to keep you blog updated - it will work and it will be efficient.

A little experiment:

1. The forums got me from not on the map to the top 100 in my 2 word phrase, 30 million hits on google
2. optimizing the site came first and when it took hold i wen up to the 50's
3. Started 6 blogs with good content and they all link back to the site, got to the top 15
4. Stopped all of the above because I got busy, now at 73

You tell me what works...

I've seen the most traffic from blogger myself, plus the link backs are always good. As for Wordpress, good luck, they are very quick to delete blogs that even smell of promotion. Never did see much traffic from WP anyways.

There are some pros and cons in both services. For instance blogspot is indexed very quickly and gets rankings easier, but it is the #1 service that spammers use, so many people don't like blogspot hosted blogs. WP blogs are very clean and the fact that they have no ads, and that the people who own those blogs don't monetize them helps with social media. I had huge social media attention in the past with a WP blog and I think this is one of the reasons for that.

I have used wordpress.com blogs with some success. Apart from the SEO value, they are also biggest referrers to my site in many cases.

I think he's talking about autoblogging. There are ;lots of resources out there about it including free ebooks eg bloggerhigh.com.

The advantage is that you get backlinks from different IPs, high ranking domains etc. If you use wordpress, there are OODLES of free sites you can use that allow you to create a wordpress blog free. They generally monetize using ads etc, but if your only purpose is to get backlinks, that doesn't matter.

I've seen sites move up half a mill places in alexa in a month on the back of a well orchestrated autoblogging campaign.

Not for the white-hatted, of course...

there's no problem with creating blogs then linking your sites to it as long as the content of your blog linking to your site are all original....
