What directory submission service is the safest and best value?

I need to do submissions for a client and want to know the best service

Before answer this question you should see if directory submissions worth anything in our days.

I mean it is not bad to have 2-3 links from directories related to your niche, but submitting your site to many directories will probably cause problems or in the best scenario will not do any good.

so why do people recommend it?

Do it manually and choose the directories careful. It is no point in getting worthless links.

I suppose because they are newbies. In our days directories don't give too much value in SEO terms. On the other hand getting 500 or 1000 links in one week and then nothing will really harm your rankings. At least if you want to submit your site to multiple directories, do just a few submissions per day.

Directory submissions to 100s of directories is not a bad trick and works great if your submissions are done correctly to most relevant category. You can do a quick search on google and find some decent directory submission providers. Compare prices and reviews and go with what suits your budget.

@Olaf: I wouldn't agree with you there. I agree that general directories have lost a LOT of value in last couple of years. But I always manage to get good results for mild competition keywords and would put my money on general directories.

 I have still a few niche directories which are doing well in google and other searches. A few years ago I got xxx daily visitors in a general directory but this is over.

Check the google webmaster guidelines, they are about providing unique content. Directory listings are not unique

I agree with that point. Google recently removed directories from their guidelines but also had a comment about directories in a Q&A session that they don't discount directory list.

I 'totally' agree about the duplicate content in directories, many directory owners (I know a couple of them) put extra effort in ensuring that every submission has unique description. You can see this kind of duplicate content 'everywhere' including niche directories, forums (cross posting) and blogs.. The uniqueness of content is highly dependent on people behind the website.

i am confused. To your opinion, general directory submission doesn't add any value into SEO process, and because of that, I should not spend time for this kind of work. I checked randomly the list of top 100 directories from vilesilencer and found that they're general directories too. So directory submission is no longer effective? more confusing...

yeah since a 1 or 2 years, directory submissions are only a business for a few webmasters.
The modern link broker will ask YOU to sell a link from your site (not that I think that this good)

Look why should Google index sites that holding know information? A customer of mine has a directory like website, the visitors went down from 2000 a day to 150 after the site becomes a little bigger.
sure you can "manually" submit your site to a few directories to tell google that your belongs to a particular category but this submission will not help you to get into the Google SERPs.

Manually submission is better than Auto submission.

I think there are two major reasons why the general directories are failing beyond what Google has to say or not say about them.

Many seem to think running a directory will make them a fast buck. They use a free script, the default template, a category dump and think they'll be the next DMOZ. Many of them don't even bother to change the default tags on the template to something other than what was put there by the script creator. The majority of the new general directories being launched are of such a poor quality that there is simply no value to being listed there.

The other issue is the broadness of many of the categories. In a general directory, the gardening category could have sites on growing vegetables, growing herbs, outdoor furniture, fish ponds, tree removal, lawn mowers, etc. I doubt there would be enough similar content to be ranked for any of those terms and to rank for the generic term of gardening would seem very unlikely.

The better general directories will take a category like that and start dividing it up once they get enough submissions. Most don't bother doing so and then can't understand why their site never ranks for anything in Google. The general directories who are constantly refining their categories, listing only quality sites and rewriting the descriptions are still doing well and several send my sites traffic. Granted, the traffic they send isn't huge but one writing client can easily pay for several hours of submitting to directories.

Also, Google is not the end-all/be-all on the net. Yahoo does appear to still factor directories into their rankings. And trust me, a top 5 ranking on Yahoo can send still send hundreds of monthly visitors to a site.

For me, Manual submission works best... using automated software to do the job is not guaranteed...

Sure. First of all getting links from no content sites don't really worth anyway. One the other hand if a site gets a bunch of links in a week and then no links at all google gives weight to those links after a lot of time(it's like a penalty). This is a measure to deal with google bombing.

So in other words to be ok, you should get links with a stable rhythm. If you really want to submit your site to directories, grab a list and submit to 2-3 directories per day. There is no need for rush.
