The reason to consider not to choose SEO as a career is that seo wont be around for ever. I mean as search engines will become better and have more user generated rankings seo will convert to smm or web marketing in general.

Alex that's true, but seo is transforming to smm very fast. In 5 years social media will be more interesting area than seo and that's why all seo experts in our days convert to the social media marketing.

Hello,

Good reason is if you can market directly to local businesses then you can sometime charge a pretty penny. The bad side is the costs are quite competitive so you can sometimes be competing with someone that will work for almost nothing.

As for me, SEO is not a career! It's only a job during a crisis!

Working from home.
A topic who changes all the time. Not boring.
Good payment.
Despite the crisis you could find a lot to work.

You are right. It's a very free work. It's an advantage. But I don't like it very much.

I love SEO.  I think SEO will be there till search engines are there.  Even if search engines get better and better, the revenue will depent on the quality and users like Google.  So, they have to rely on organic listings majorly to attract users.  As an SEO, its our part to get the site ranked higher with all ethical ways.

Though I will get hard and hard to rank higher as search engines get smarter and smarter.

I think we should talk about web analytics in general, not only about search engine optimization.

I consider SEO as a Career because it's almost one of the types of work which I think is included in the category of Web Marketing Promotions. It also helps you a lot to earn extra income from it. Being an SEO Specialist is a skill, you need to compete to other people to market your own.

I totally agree with Nikolas.

SEO will dissapear sooner or later, but it will.
I suggest you to change your question, and think if you want an online marketing career.

SEO has been around since the beginning of search engines. It used to be you could flood your key words to get you a better ranking then it moved to flooding a landing page and so on down the road we go. Now it is all about flooding community based sites. It is a never ending circle that as a webmaster you have to play. But to think that SEO will disappear when it has always been here seems a little off to me. And really with web 3.0 on the horizon it will be a guessing game to see where the push and drive goes. With sites like Facebook and Myspace already blocking the valid use of these sites it won't be long til the engines devalue all networking sites for what ever they desire the new flavor to be. Keep in mind with the ability to index flash now this could change the way websites are forever. No longer will a standard blog or static site suffice. I am already seeing this with some of my higher end customers that are willing to pay more then $1000 for the site.
