Wildcard SSL simply means, it allows you to secure multiple subdomains hosted over a single domain.
for example If you have a website called example.com and have subdomains like ex.example.com, etc.example.com.... then wildcard SSL allows you to secure them all without buying separate certificate for all. Smiley

SSL (Secure Socket Layer) is an protocol created by Netscape to make sure that the transactions between web servers and the client browsers are secured. Doing transactions without using an SSL, the information sent to a website is always at a high risk, as it can be easily intercepted and viewed by hackers.
SSL certificates are for those who have or wish to run an online shop, if you are planning for an e-commerce site, a SSL certificate is strongly recommend for your store to secure your transactions. The SSL will ensure that the sensitive data of customers like credit card information is encrypted while the transactions are done. The SSL certificates can also be used to protect the information such as passwords used to login your site.
