The value of signature linking can be seen when improved rankings take place after you have provided quality or helpful posts/comments on forums. Contributing to the discussion does not mean that you just agree with the topic; stating your true beliefs or opinion can make a difference because other members will take notice of you and may gain interest in visiting your site to see what it has to offer. Furthermore, choose a popular forum because forums with few visitors show that it does not make an impact on an average person. You should also take part in topics that is related to your site, something that interests you and topics wherein you can lend your expertise.
However, find out the rules of the board before posting anything on a forum. You do not want to be blatantly advertising your site when it is not allowed. This will be detrimental because your post and signature link will be considered as spam. You could be kicked out of a board and this will hurt any chances of someone possibly visiting your site. It would also be wise not to talk about your site right away when you are new to the forum and has just recently posted several comments on it. Start to build first a winsome camaraderie with the other members and increase your reputation as a knowledgeable member of the forum community. Once you have gained their trust, then whatever you have to say will appear trustworthy.
Remember to check the relevance of your content, anchor text, meta tag, etc on your site before you post anything because spiders go through and verify all of these things before making your signature a back link. Lastly, update your site so visitors have a reason to come back.

Full article on forum signature linking can be found on..
hxxp://agentsofvalue.com/services/outsource-forum-signature-linking/ (still cannot post live URL..so replace hxxp with http)
I think instead of copy-pasting anything..it is a good practice to give a exact URL where you find the info. It also gives credit to the original contributor.

A link from a community that you are active is helping because the members who are friends of yours will probably click them. But for SEO it is not that good as many of those links will be irrelevant to your site's content. Of course that depends on the forums you are posting to.

Thanks for sharing your experience with me. I think, one should first try to increase his reputation by communicating with the other members then after that when the profile is strong enough then the signatures should be created.

You advices were good for a newbie in seo Every one who is here knows about forum posting, but it can help some people. Also I am agree with Nikolas because many forum signatures are in irrelevant pages and its not good. However maybe it doesn't hurt you, but it doesn't help you too.

Choose forums with high PR. There are services that sell lists of high PR do-follow forums, blog sites, etc. I haven't tried that yet. But most people say it works.

It's a question of ethics. You can join a high PR forum that does not interest you, and where you have nothing to contribute. You can make posts like, "Thanks for sharing", just to drop a sig-link. When they ban you as a spammer, don't take offence, because that is what you will have been doing.

You'll definitely want to target forums within your niche so that you can be helpful and informational -- this will help drive traffic and generate interest for your produce or service. You don't want to just be there to promote your site.

An important note!
The search engines do not index everything. Forum threads that have no useful content will be ignored.
People who makes posts like, "Thanks for sharing", or "Great post", are helping to make sure search engines ignore the thread, and that their own sig-links will not be indexed.

Yes forum signature do help you in building backlinks for your sites but it will be better if you contribute on a thread that way not only you are building your profile but also helping someone, so it's better to share your opinion rather then agreeing to some one unnecessarily. "The search engines do not index everything. Forum threads that have no useful content will be ignored." that's a good point C0ldf1re
