I was trying to understand referrer spam, and was about to ask a n00b question. Then I noticed the age of the posts. Is this technique dead? (I hope so, so that I never have to understand it!)

Actually it is not dead, but it is not as common it used to be a few years ago

Thanks. So I've just re-read things. Could you check that I've understood it? I am not planning to spam, just trying to understand the concepts for legit marketing.
If my site has an outgoing link to megawidget.com and a visitor clicks on the link, then:- (1) the webmaster at megawidget.com might investigate referrals and look at my site, and (2) the search engines might read the megawidget.com referral log and uprank my site.
Have I understood that right? Any advice will be welcome!
Just another rainy day

Well, I'm glad you found my post worth reading. It would be even better if anyone can answer my questions.
